"Apply technology informatics skills to solve specific industry data and information management problems, with a focus on usability and designing for users."

Definition:

This competency describes the transition of informatics knowledge from the theoretical realm to the practical universe. Informatics introduces a powerful problem-solving toolkit, where business processes can be augmented, users can be put in control, and data systems can run efficiently. Now what that actually means in practice is still largely determined by what space it is being applied to. Informatics skills can be used in a plethora of information technology spaces, but it is largely found in the spaces between user and machine. In some cases, users may find themselves faced with data and information management issues that deteriorate efficiency.

Informatics skills can be used to address inefficiencies derived from ineffective data and information management practices. Establishing proper metadata labeling is imperative to upholding digital organization and quick retrieval which effectively bolsters productivity. Implementing digital asset management software also further enhances data and information management while providing a user-friendly workflow. Digital asset examination holds a crucial role in determining both the structure and approach to data management methods. Assessing data types and business information helps determine which software can be used to display such data in a manner that fits with an organization’s framework. The assignments I have chosen to exemplify my understanding and knowledge of this competency focus on the trifecta of users, business applications, and modern technology.

Description:

#1: Digital Asset Management for an Indie Video Game Company

In the INFM 207 course, Digital Asset Management, I reported on how to effectively manage digital assets for a hypothetical indie video game company. In my report, I provided the background for this fictional company to describe the present circumstances they find themselves in. My work primarily focuses on how I would set up this business for success. Using digital asset management techniques, I essentially would craft and facilitate a centralized repository for effective file management. In the report, I primarily focused on how the digital asset management system will need to be formed and how I would go about ensuring the successful implementation of new technologies to do so. Keeping this in mind, I sought to describe how legacy assets could be incorporated into the new asset management system.

I described techniques for classifying and organizing various file types, metadata, taxonomy methods in ways that would benefit users, in this case, the employees of the hypothetical game company. Introducing a new digital asset management system would also have to maintain a steady workflow and create a space for inherited assets. Aside from my own theoretical input, I also reviewed real-world software that addresses these concerns. Through this assignment, I utilized theoretical informatics concepts and practical informatics.

#2: Taxonomy, Metadata and Asset Organization

Another assignment from the INFM 207 course solidified metadata concepts through practical application. In this assignment, I was provided with movie clips to draft metadata fields and values. I was able to identify useful metadata fields, and also suggest methods for quicker metadata creation via common factors, typically either technical data (like file types) or through an asset’s content.

#3: Implementing IoT Devices and mHealth Services

In the INFM 210 course, Health Informatics, I created a presentation that focused on including Internet of Things (IoT) devices and mHealth services. Throughout this assignment, I described the benefits of implementing IoT devices and mHealth services in the healthcare system. While there are many benefits to these technologies, I made sure to include a section regarding privacy concerns as well. This assignment demonstrates how modern technology can be used to bolster business processes and user outcomes.

Discussion:

Efficient metadata application in everyday use is key to facilitating an organized digital space. This skill can be applied in every job that handles digital assets. Effective metadata application enhances asset searchability and business productivity. Less time will be wasted on finding an asset and more time will be spent on tasks using such assets when metadata is properly applied. Additionally, skilled application of modern technology can only augment business practices. Businesses can benefit from understanding how modern technologies work and how they can be used to complement workflow, data management, and user interaction.
